From Tehuacana

Charlotte wasn't in our class. She was about two years behind, I think, but some of you may remember her. My brother sent this article and photo that were in the Mexia Daily.

Mexia City Hall

I've been looking for a good photo of this building, and I've posted a few before. This one is from the Mexia Daily. Here's the caption: "The Mexia City Hall - Civic Center as it was when completed in 1927. Construction began in 1926, with the cornerstone laid on April 20, 1927. We found this photo on the wall in the office of Judy Jacobsen at the City Hall. Judy was able to obtain information for us that indicated that the old structure was built by J. H. Horn and Son Contractors of Abilene. The Mayor at that time was J. Sanford Smith; Commissioners were J. K. Hughes, Jon H. Sweatt, Blake Smith, and W. D. Freeman. The original design was made by Page Brother Architects of Austin. They recently notified the City of Mexia that they had by chance found the old blueprints of the Civic Center. They agreed to package them up and send to Mexia, where they are now displayed on a wall. These old blueprints are invaluable when making needed repairs."

Gibbs Memorial Library

This is the Gibbs Memorial Library that was built after the one on Commerce Street closed and became an Episcopal Church. It's now been replaced by a newer building. Some of us were discussing this at the reunion because of an e-mail from Marvin Berry, who believes that he was the first person to check out a book from this library. I don't know if records going that far back are in existence, but it would be fun to see if they are.

Slow Dancing

Jackie McKenzie and Betty Boyd (at the Girl Scout cabin?) Update: Betty says this is Bobbie Pendleton, Ann's mother. I'll go along with this.

Senior Play

Another newspaper photo. Marlis Ellis is vamping me, and I look like I'm enjoying it. I'm sure I was. I seldom got vamped in real life. (Okay, maybe the word I'm looking for isn't "seldom." It's "never.")

Senior Play

John Black and Louise Archibald starring in "Almost Summer." This is another newspaper photo, so the quality isn't great.

At the Sweetheart Ball

Woody Marrs, Linda Weeks, Betty Boyd, Lynn Roy Weeks. Is it just me, or does Woody look about ten years old?

A Rare Pair

Ken Trotter and Lynn Roy Weeks, in case you didn't know. They must have been the cutest couple at the dance.

The Band, 1959

I can recognize several people in this if I enlarge it. Not a very good Mexia Daily News photo, however.

Wise Men

One of the wise men is me. The others, as you can see on the program, are Charles Mitchell and Reed Jackson. The kids are listed on the program, but obviously not all of them are in the photo. That's Louise Carr trying to get them to behave.

And Here are the Songs

The sad news is that I remember very few of these. I remember the encores because I hated "Ides of March" and liked "Amparito Roco." I remember "On the Trail" because it was the Phillip Morris theme song. I remember "My Fair Lady" because of a joke about one of the songs (I used to call "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face" by the title "I've Trown a Crust into Your Face"). I vaguely recall playing "Themes from the Nutcracker Suite." I'm sure Raymond and James remember the ones they soloed on, but I don't even remember "Holiday for Winds," though I'm sure the clarinets must have had a big part.
