National Honor Society

I can't remember if this photo was in the annual or not. Probably it was. This is the 1958 group. The picture enlarges really well if you click on it. Love those petticoats!

First Christian Church

We had an earlier picture of this church, but it was taken from a different angle, and the trees were leafed out. (You can see it here.) I think this is from the late '50s because it seems to be from the same postcard group as some others I've put here lately. Notice the handy mailbox on the post in the right foreground near the street sign. I wonder if there are any of those left in town.

East Commerce, Late 1950s

You can see Sinclair's Shoe Store and J. C. Penney. The Palace Theater marquee is gone, but the facade is there. For some reason I don't remember the Club Grill, which seems to be about where Yowell's Drug was. If you have really good eyes, you can see Majestic Cleaners way down the street.

Kendrick & Horn

This is pretty much the way I remember East Commerce. You can see the Sears sign down the block and the Goodyear sign beyond it. Looks like the Western Auto sign, too, but I'm not sure of that one. Remember Poor Ol' Woodrow and the Green Corner?

East Commerce, Late 1950s

The other day we had a view of West Commerce. So turn about is fair play. I have a couple of enlargements to follow. They're a little less blurry.

Teeing Off

I'm sure some of you must have played miniature golf at this course in Corsicana. Remember that I mentioned a while back getting some letters that I'd written to Rodney Allbright when I was in college? In one of them I mention that Judy and I will be double-dating with him and Mary Kay Wardlaw and playing miniature golf. He must have won, because he still had this pass for a free game.

May 1959

Mike Leary and I went to the regional slide rule contest in Denton. We rode with Mr. and Mrs. Bates, and if you ever had an opportunity to do that, you know it was always an entertaining experience. This picture was taken in one of the school parking lots.

As you can tell, you're looking from west to east. The Lone Star Gas Co. is on the left, in front of the '53 Ford. It's easy to make out the First National Bank and Karner Phillips on that side.

Happy Easter

I have no idea when this picture was taken. For all I know, it might have been Easter. I remember the stained glass windows in this old building well, and the one to the right of the door in the top center is Jesus praying in the Garden, appropriate for Easter day. You can see it a little better if you enlarge the picture.

Another Street Scene

The Palace Theater is at the lower right. I don't believe it was located there by the time we came along. I don't remember a Palace Hotel at all. Click on the picture to enlarge it, and you can read the Farrar Lumber Co. sign on a building sort of in the middle to left side. My grandfather managed Farrar for many years. It was on Sherman Street, south of the Chevrolet place.

The National Theater

Of course this was taken a little before my time, but I remember the National well. It seems to have been in the same spot here as it was when I was a kid. I think I can recognize the First National Bank Building on the right, too. You can click on the picture for a much better view.

Youngblood's

Remember Youngblood's Fried Chicken? I guess the Colonel put them out of business. There was one in Waco, and there was obviouslyone in Dallas, since someone who shall remain nameless (*kaff* Claudia *kaff*) lifted this one there and indictated that the band ate there when we went to the Cotton Bowl to play.

Yesterday I heard the Coasters singing "Young Blood," and that reminded me of this menu.

A Dip in the Pool

There's a swimming pool in Mexia now, but it's not this one. It's been replaced. The photo's a little blurry, but you might recognize the high board in the background and the wall in the foreground that divided the baby pool from the larger one. I have no idea who any of the people in the photo are.

Mystery Man

Norris Lumber Company

Norris Lumber was on the right just past Palestine Street if you were going north on McKinney. This is an old picture, since I remember the bushes as being a lot higher in the '50s. I think they still had the same truck, though. In the background (far left) is the Chatham house. You might want to click on the pic to enlarge it and get a much better look.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

If this were fall, there'd be a game tonight. I remember going to one Huntsville game vividly because Mike Leary had brought a pear to eat. I was sitting with him on the bus, and he was tossing the pear into the air. I made a grab for it and knocked it out the window. Why do I remember things like that, when I can barely remember my own kids' birthdays?

I never knew who came up with the slogans for the football ribbons, and I don't remember many that were this fancy.

Here's the rest of the left-hand side of the wedding photo that you saw here. Margaret Rife, Sandra, and Marlis are the three bridesmaids on the left. I see by the article that the little kids are Laura Lou Pittman and Ronnie Roark. So is that Marth Roark in front of the candles?
