Fred "Firpo" Marberry

Professional Baseball Player. Considered one of the great relief pitchers in baseball history. The right-hander pitched 14 years in the major leagues, compiling a 147-89 record, 3.63 earned run average and 101 saves. With Washington from 1923-32, he led the American League six times in appearances and five times in saves. He was 19-12 in 1929, 15-5 in 1930 and 16-4 in 1931. In the 1924 World Series he started Game 3 against the New York Giants and was the losing pitcher as he yielded five hits and three runs in three innings in a 6-4 loss. He saved both Games 2 and 4. He also pitched three shutout innings in Game 7 as the Senators won 4-3 in 12 innings. The following year he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Pittsburgh, but the Pirates won the title in seven games. He was traded on Dec. 14, 1932 along with Carl Fischer to Detroit for pitcher Earl Whitehill. He was 16-11 in 1934 and 15-5 in 1935. He struggled in the 1935 World Series, but the Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs in six games. He finished his career with the New York Giants and Senators in 1936. (bio by: Ron Coons)
